InvestmentNews: Women Adviser Summit 2018 – Denver, Colorado

2018 - InvestmentNews Recap (1)

As luck would have it, I was able to attend and speak at the InvestmentNews Women Adviser Summit in Denver, Colorado on September 13, 2018. It will also be one of my greatest accomplishments both personally and professionally. (A huge thank you goes out to Theresa Gralinski and Suzanne Siracuse of InvestmentNews for their warmth and hospitality in having me at both the cocktail reception and event, as well as Jennifer Bacarella of Sigma Financial Corporation for having me ‘fill in’ for her absence – which is impossible to do, if you know Jenny!)

What sessions stood out?

  • Performance excellence of world class advisers: Asset acquisition through community involvement and philanthropic planning? (Susan Kay of MFS Fund Distributors, Inc.) I literally walked away with SO MANY IDEAS to teach advisors about prospecting as well as even help some small business owner friends find new sources of prospects. Susan should have mic-dropped at the end of the session. I think she would have received a standing ovation for her presentation!
  • Growth strategies: How to supercharge your business and define your unique value (Panel moderated by Theresa Gralinski) Ok, yes I was on this panel BUT I learned so much from my colleagues who were featured. Hannah Buschbom spoke about her work with The W Source and collecting a wheel of fortune for the advisors who run their own W Source Chapter. Lisa Sappenfield Boyer spoke about the small town she works in, yet is a top-producing advisor each year due to her processes and people. Martha Macken Elliott runs a huge practice out of the Mayo Employee Credit Union and yet makes personal time for each of her clients not only once per year, but many of them twice and more. I wish I was able to take my notebook up on stage to write ideas down as they spoke.
  • Is your client’s gender costing her a fortune? How to empower women to break money silence and acquire more wealth (Kathleen Burns Kingsbury of KBK Wealth Connection) This session was not only eye-opening for many in the room, but Kathleen is funny, too! I was sitting next to a woman from Georgia at my table and literally showed her how to buy Kathleen’s books on Amazon. If you not seen her speak, you’re missing out!

Who made heads turn?

  • OppenheimerFunds – I know I know, Oppenheimer is a company not a person, but if you had been at the event and had your power portrait taken (you can click here to see mine) – I’m telling you, you would’ve stood in line for this!
  • Kathleen McQuiggan – She was definitely the star of the show. I have been admiring Kathleen’s #InvestInWomen work for years (and she was an inspiration behind my #FemalesAndFinance initiative and book), but to see her in her element – lauded by her colleagues, loved with each of her words, you would have been moved by her dedication to women in wealth management.
  • James White – A dude was there and it was great! James is a wonderful male ally and spoke on a great panel about diversity and inclusion. I was only able to spend a short amount of time with him, but he offers a wealth of knowledge around the D&I space. Grateful I got to catch his session.

What were the huge takeaways?

  • TD Ameritrade‘s #WiseWords book – Although Kate Healy was not there, she was in spirit. The book was a wonderful addition to our attendance. Thank you!
  • MFS Investment Management – The booklet that went along with Susan Kay’s presentation is outstanding and if you make me give back, I will fight you.
  • Sigma Financial Corporation – The battery charger included in the gift bags is outstanding! I have used it several times and it works as well as my Mophie – what a great present for the attendees!

Be a Person of Action: You still have time to catch the next meeting in San Francisco where not only many of these amazing women will be, but also my #FemalesAndFinance friend and member, Sonya Dreizler, will be speaking (an extra special treat for you!). What an honor it was to be included this year. You will learn so much, grow from the experience, meet new friends, find new mentors, and overall be a better #FinServ person in the end!
